Badland
The concept of "Badlands" has had many interpretations but it usually refers to an environment where you don't want to be such as the dangerous world of Badland. Even so, it's exciting in a way as you never know what kinds of dangers will be lurking ahead and whether you'll be able to respond to them effectively. You're playing as a harmless creature living in a pretty bleak and hazardous area, but at least you can fly and maneuver around to get to safety. In fact, that's your only means of defense so thank goodness you're small, agile, and to some extent, adaptable.
About Badland
The whole silhouette style of the game creates a feeling of uncertainty with a somber tone as it plunges everything into the realm of the unknown. This game uses it throughout, but you still get the full picture without ever losing that feeling. The world may be desolate, but you're not and that's the whole premise of this game. The world is trying to take you down but you have such a strong urge to survive and live that you're willing to squeeze through the tightest spots just to make that happen. You end up rooting for the little creature and you want to help them succeed.
How to Play
Badland is a 2D platforming flying game about guiding a creature through various tunnels by using the mouse or keyboard. Click the Left Mouse Button to flap your wings or press the Spacebar. With each flap, the creature gains a burst of height while moving forward. When not flapping, the creature will drop quickly. The goal is to get the creature safely to the end of each tunnel by reaching an escape tube at the end.
The main dangers that the creature has to deal with are environmental. The most prominent is the screen which will start scrolling after the creature from left to right the moment that they start moving. If it catches up to the creature, you'll be sent back a bit in the level. Other hazards include things like falling rocks which can block your path and buzzsaws that can rip through the creature. The creature is also affected by physics like gravity, momentum, and force which can affect its movement.
While going through the levels, there's a chance to come across strange glowing objects. Touching them will affect the creature in various ways. They can cause the creature to become larger, smaller, multiply, or change how they interact with the environment. Collecting these objects is necessary for navigating certain parts of the levels. Their effects won't wear off unless an object with the opposite effect is collected.
Tips and Tricks
As a game where you constantly need to keep moving, you'll always want to be looking ahead as much as you can. Although the creature rises and falls rapidly, the level can change quite suddenly leaving you little time to react. Rhythmic flapping is the key to keeping a constant pace.
